Paras Industrial Systems
Engr. Elpidio M. Paras establishes an electronics retail and repair shop in Cagayan de Oro — offering customized cassette recording, betamax rental, and electronics repair. Trading as Paras Electro, the shop installed sound systems for disco houses across Mindanao: Salamin Disco and Alta Tierra in CDO, Hotel Rio in Iloilo, and Xenon Disco in Davao. He also pioneered the idea of putting a TV and VCR in restaurants to show live sports and boxing — long before cable reached most homes.
Manufacturing satellite dishes
Engr. Paras begins manufacturing satellite dishes, gradually building systems capable of capturing signals from the early Intelsat series. His precision hardware and growing expertise soon earned him a reputation well beyond Mindanao.
Capturing history
His satellite receiving system captures the EDSA Revolution, being beamed worldwide for the first time by CNN — giving Cagayanons their first glimpse of the media revolution. He then built progressively larger dishes to capture the very weak Intelsat signals, and within three years rich businessmen and entrepreneurs from all over the Philippines were ordering dishes from him.
The cable industry opens
Executive Order 205, signed by President Cory Aquino, deregulates the cable industry. Cable operators all over the country begin ordering satellite dishes from Engr. Paras. Among the first was Sen. Ramon Magsaysay Jr., whose cable operation covered the provinces of Olongapo, Bicol, and Batangas.
Parasat Cable TV, Inc.
With an initial investment of ₱200,000 and fewer than 10 employees — mostly fresh graduates and OJT trainees from technical schools — Parasat is founded at the backyard of Engr. Paras's own residence. It began wiring its own subdivision with just 12 channels. It is, and remains, the forerunner of cable TV in Mindanao.
A regional leader, still expanding
33 branches and counting — full coverage across Cagayan de Oro City, plus Bukidnon (Manolo Fortich, Malaybalay, Valencia, Don Carlos), Lanao del Norte (Tubod, Baroy), Zamboanga del Sur (Pagadian), and Negros Occidental (San Carlos, Escalante). New branches are opening soon in Davao, Quezon, Buda, Calinan, Dangcagan, and Kolambugan.
